The closer the cold season, the more owners of private houses are thinking about how to insulate the roof of the attic? Having insulated this room, you can noticeably increase the number of living space of the house without any capital construction.
Why is it necessary?
Polyurethane foam insulation – how to apply on the attic
Before moving on to talk about how to warm the roof correctly, let’s find out why it is necessary. Since the attic is located directly under the roof, the total area of its contact with the external environment is much larger than that of the underlying floors. This makes heating an unsuitable attic useless – in fact, you will “heat” street air.
The lack of good thermal insulation of the attic floor leads to the formation of icicles. This happens due to the fact that the flows of heat, going from the inside at home, melt snow on the surface of the roof, and it begins to tackle. Correctly done insulation “works” in both directions – that is, it does not pass heat from the street and does not give heated air from the house.
Another task that the roof insulation solves, the video story is presented on our website is to prevent condensate formation. Water drops are formed due to the difference in temperature between the room of the attic and the street, therefore, a separate waterproofing of this problem will not solve. The lack of proper insulation over time will lead to the fact that the roof will be dented from the inside and, as a result, covered with mold.
Material for insulation of the roof of the attic with your own hands
The secrets of the insulation of the attic – how not to harm yourself?
So, first of all, you need to decide what exactly the attic will be insulated. The cheapest material for today is the foam, which many choose for the decoration of the attic. However, a low price is perhaps the only advantage of this material. Due to the inability of the foam to “breathe” in the room, most likely, it will be quite damp and uncomfortable. In addition, polystyrene is a favorite “treat” of mice.
The most convenient in work and safe is the roll mineral – or glass water insulation. Since this material is enough to elastic, it is inserted between the rafters. In order for no gaps left in the process of drying the tree between the beams and the insulation, the size of the cut -off strip of mineral or glass wool should be several centimeters more than the distance from one rafters to another.
It is worth noting another popular insulation for the attic roof – extruded polystyrene foam. These dense sheets in size of 1.2×0.6 m are equipped with a spike-paz system, which significantly facilitates their docking together. The method of laying extruded insulation is slightly different, since it is mounted behind the rafters.
In general, the method of insulation of the cover space, like the insulation itself, should be determined at the stage of designing the house. In addition, when choosing thermal insulation, you need to pay attention to such characteristics:
Fire safety;
resistance to moisture;
frost resistance;
the ability to hold the initial form.
Typical errors
How to prevent mistakes? In some cases, non -compliance with all the rules of insulation of the room can lead to the need to analyze not only the heat -insulating “pie”, but the entire roof.
Firstly, it is very important not to make a mistake with the choice of the thickness of the insulation, whether it is mineral wool or polystyrene foam. How thick the material will be determined by the climatic conditions of the area. The north the area of the building, the thicker the insulation should be. In the event that the size of the rafters is smaller than the thickness of the insulation layer, they must be increased. The increase in the rafters should be made so that their total height coincides with the total thickness of the sheets of insulation and the size of the ventilation gap.
Secondly, insulation will not be full-fledged if wind protection is not established together with it. It is mounted from the side of the facade of the house, using sheets of OSP, fiberboard or special membranes for this. Thirdly, the technology using cotton materials involves a vapor barrier layer, which uses subcutaneous films with the necessary characteristics.
Insulation scheme from the inside of the room
There are two methods of insulation. The first is used when the house has already been built “turnkey”. In this case, the work occurs from the inside of the room. Before starting work, all rafters should be treated with an antiseptic (if this was not done earlier), and the elements of wooden structures on which there are traces of tree or mold, if possible, replace.
The day before the start of work, the insulation must be removed from the package in order to give it the opportunity to take the original form.
First of all, the crate is attached to the rafters. Then the windproof membrane is mounted, “shooting” it to the rafters with a construction stapler, after which they begin to lay the insulation. It should be cut in such a way as to get up between the elements of the crate. On top of the insulation is closed with another layer of non -woven membrane – this time vapor barrier is used. This is followed by the finish of the attic with drywall, wooden wallpaper or lining.
Of course, a more correct solution would be to warm up at the stage of building a house. With this method, it is primarily necessary to attach a vapor barrier film to the rafters using a construction stapler. Then, a heater is laid on top of the waterproofing membrane (extruded polystyrene foam can be used), and another film is placed on it – this time protecting from steam. Following is a crate on which the selected roof is mounted – it can be a metal tile, slate or ondulin. There is a slightly different option for insulation of the attic in which the insulation is placed between the rafters. At the same time, the waterproofing film is mounted under the crate of the roof, and vapor barrier – on the insulation from the inside of the house.
Another way is to use the sprayed material, such as polyurethane foam. It is sprayed using a special installation without installation of various membranes. The feasibility of such insulation is best discussed at the stage of designing the attic floor.
This is the article on how to insulate the attic roof, the video of which you will find in the application is completed, completed. We hope that the attic in your house will be warm, beautiful and cozy.
