Interesting fact – a material designed to overlay the ceiling is produced exclusively in Russian factories. What is the difference between the wall and ceiling “colleagues”? The main difference is the structure of the material. Ceiling consist of two paper layers glued together. As a rule, special embossing is applied to the upper layer. It gives the material the volume and thereby hides some flaws of the ceiling, which, unfortunately, in our homes not so rare. Unfortunately, this ceiling coating can only be white and painting (if you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations) cannot be subject. This is more than compensated by the variety of textures – there are about two hundred of them.
The ceiling wallpaper has several disadvantages. Their life does not exceed four to five years – they turn yellow over time (especially when it comes to the kitchen), absorb dust and lose their attractive appearance. It is not necessary to do this with the whole ceiling, you can only cover up where it is required, and after drying, fading the “patch” with sandpaper.
The good news for those who, as the basis, have an almost even painted or white ceiling, is that it is not necessary to delete such a finish at all. Of course, this is provided that the old coating does not peel off and does not fall off, otherwise it will have to be removed in the same way as this is done before the installation of ceiling tiles.
In order to check the condition of the old paint or whitewashing, you need to stick a piece of tape on the ceiling and tear it sharply – if there is practically nothing left on it, you do not need to remove the coating.
But no matter how high -quality the old coating is, it is still impossible to do without primer. Its application will simplify the work in the future and will help to avoid peeling off wallpaper. For these purposes, it is best to choose a universal composition on an acrylic basis, applying it in two or three layers.
How to glue wallpaper on the ceiling
After you prepared the wall and the primer has dried up, you can start work. First you should decide how the wallpaper will be pasted – in parallel or perpendicular to the wall with the window. There is no strict rule here, so each master solves this problem on his own. But no one can do without markings. To make it, it should be measured from the wall, in parallel of which the stripes will go, a distance of two centimeters less than the width of the roll. This is done so that if the wall is not very straight, a large gap is not formed between it and the wallpaper. Such points are noted from the opposite ends, after which they are “beaten off” with a marginal thread.
After that, you need to cut the wallpaper into the desired length, making a stock of about five to six centimeters. Then the glue is divorced – this can be done manually or using a drill nozzle. It must be applied as indicated by the manufacturer. Domestic wallpapers, as a rule, need to be impregnated with them. To do this, it is applied to the canvas, which then bends from two ends towards the middle. For no more than ten minutes to “maintain” wallpaper, otherwise they can break. Imported material does not need to be smeared with glue, since it is applied directly to the ceiling.
The first canvas is glued strictly close to the marked strip, and rolls with a rubber roller towards the middle to the edge, moving the “Christmas tree”. After the canvas is completely glued, you need to cut the excess. To do this, a metal ruler or spatula is tightly applied to the ceiling, and the unnecessary strip is cut off with a sharp wallpaper knife.
All subsequent canvases are strictly glued to the previous ones, and also leveled and trimmed. Excess glue that protruded to the surface must be immediately removed with dry and pure rags. After the wallpaper is glued, they must dry – while the room should not “walk” drafts. Sunlight should be avoided, otherwise the wallpaper can dry too quickly and turn from the ceiling coating into a floor.
