Ordinary slate, painted in any color, looks completely different. Modern technologies make it possible to transform nondescript gray sheets and make the roof of the house bright, beautiful and unusual.
How to choose and how to paint slate?
Roofing the roof of airless spray
First, let’s talk about why you need to paint slate? It would seem that this is quite self -sufficient roofing material, whose reliability was proved by more than one decade. However, it is worth remembering how unattractive the gray slate roof looks, how the question of the need for painting ceases to be relevant.
On the other hand, the coloring also solves purely practical problems. It protects the surface of the asbestos -cement leaf from the negative effects of the environment, reduces water absorption and increases frost resistance. Therefore, staining increases the already quite long operation of the asbestos -cement roof.
Now let’s move on to the choice of the paint itself for asbestos -cement sheets. There are three types of compositions designed for staining asbestos:
Rubber acrylic;
quick -drying;
“Liquid plastic”.
The last of the three presented compositions is the worst of all for the slate roof. He is not as atmosphere as two others, and has sufficient sharp and unpleasant smell. Quick -dry enamel is characterized by high decorativeness, resistance to atmospheric phenomena and ultraviolet rays. The consumption of such a paint depending on the shade is from 0.1 to 0.15 kg/m2. The coating retains its properties for three to five years.
Acrylic paint is the most durable and safe of all presented. It creates a waterproof film on the surface of the material, which (of course, subject to proper application) persists for at least 10 years. The smooth surface, which is created by acrylic paint for the slate, helps the snow go off the roof much faster, and, therefore, reduce the pressure on the rafters and the crate. This is especially important in the light of the fact that the slate in itself creates a significant load on it. However, the consumption of this composition is greater than that of a quick -drying – it is about 300 g/m2.
Painted roof – reliably and beautiful
What is the benefit of painting slate?
If the slate is already on the roof of your house, and you decided to paint it, it is quite possible to do it. In the event that the roof was made more than one year ago, it is possible to say with almost one hundred percent confidence that dark spots appeared on it and, most likely, moss (especially the north side of the house).
Of course, you can’t paint such a slate. Therefore, it is first necessary to remove “uninvited guests”. There are several ways to do this. First, mechanical cleaning. To do this, use metal brushes, with which the moss is sloppy from the surface of the slate. To facilitate your task, sheets can be moistened with water. However, this method is very laborious, and its effectiveness is quite low. You can try to do the same using a drill and a special nozzle, but in this case you can only work on a dry roof.
It is best to use a washing machine to remove moss (like those used on car wash). Thanks to the pressure of water, moss, mold and other undesirable “visits” are literally cut off from the surface of the slate leaf. After this procedure is performed, the slate must be allowed to dry. Then you need to carefully examine each sheet. Those of them on which there are significant damage, it will be necessary to replace.
DIY painting – saving
After the slate was cleared of traces of various pollution, it must be treated with a special composition that will protect it from fungi and mold. This “medicine” can be applied manually and at a spray, not forgetting to see your own protection and putting on a special suit and respirator.
The next stage is the priming of the surface. In this case, the primer will ensure not only good adhesion of paint with the surface, but also increase the service life of the protective and decorative coating. In addition, it will help reduce the flow rate of paint – and in the case of slate, this is especially important, since it perfectly absorbs any, even the thick paint. The primer should be selected based on the recommendations of the manufacturer of the paint used in one case or another. When applying a primer, pay attention to that there are no raw places on the surface of the roof – otherwise the slate paint will lie uneven.
If you cover the roof with asbestos -cement sheets “from scratch” and do not want to buy painted slate, you can paint new sheets. They must be treated with an antiseptic in the same way, covered with a primer, and then paint.
Before starting to work, it is better to watch a training video with shifer painting – there is a video on our website. Now is the time to start directly to stain asbestos -cement sheets. According to experts, the best time for such work is mid -spring. The optimum temperature for staining slate sheets is about 15 ° C. In general, manufacturers of paints allow staining at a temperature of 5 to 30 ° C. By the way, it is best if the weather is cloudy, since under these conditions the paint dries as it should.
For painting, you can use ordinary brushes. However, this method is not very good not only because of a large amount of time necessary for work, but because of divorces that this simple tool will invariably leave. If you need to paint a flat slate, it is better to use the roller, since it will distribute the paint more evenly. Use pneumatic compressors when painting slate is unlikely to be obtained, since the coloring composition has a rather thick consistency. It is best to use a special machine for airless painting. The cost of this unit is more than a dozen thousand rubles, and it is not worth purchasing it for everyday life. In this case, there may be two solutions: the tool can be rented or invited to workers with your equipment.
Paint is applied in two layers. After the first layer was applied, it needs to be allowed to dry during the time indicated on the package (or longer).
Remember that only accurate compliance with all instructions and recommendations guarantees you the quality and durability of the updated roof.
